I believe this should be a skill most poor uni students should already have, the ability to find a better deal for that $90 jacket, and spend the remaining $2 on food, following your list of priorities.
So I'm here today to give some pointers when shopping for clothes that should be obvious, yet helpful in case you didn't know.
You're a Student, take advantage of that.
If you're studying at a uni, you would most definitely have your student card. That card is precious as it's a magical key that allows you to get discounts on almost everything: Opal, Clothing, Technology, Food. If you don't have UNIDAYS, you're missing out.
Look everywhere for a deal.
There are so many stores to choose from, so why not look for a better deal for something similar to what you want? Not all stores sell the same stuff, but there are sure to be something similar and cheaper if you look. This can also include discounts, which can easily be found online or shared between friends. The biggest discounts are from buying when the time is right, and a season is ending.
Not every store is visible.
Some stores are online and are way better than your local selection. Two examples of this can be ASOS, and THE ICONIC. If you want a list, check out this list by finder. Advantages of this can be a wider range of options and more chance of finding a deal. However, some stores require shipping fees and a few days before it arrives.
Budgeting and Limiting
This one's a big one. Most of the time, there's a special such as 2 for 1, but the thing is you most likely won't need to pairs of that shirt or pants, so you end up wasting money instead of saving. Just because there's a deal doesn't always mean you're saving money.
Try and limit your shopping, so you aren't constantly buying stuff you'll never wear. Some common tactics for this are to: Buy one item a month, which can be good if you wanna constantly have something new to wear; One in one out, Where if you wanna buy something you have to throw an item away from your wardrobe, this is good to prevent your closet from being filled up; Sell your unused clothing, this can be a good tactic along with the one in one out method, as it help's you make back some of the money you spent.
Buy longer lasting clothing
Not just clothes that will look good years down the line, but clothes that you won't need to wash often. This can help you lower your need for multiple pairs of clothing. An easy example of this is jeans, which you can wear twice, maybe three times, without needing to wash because of it's thick protection, and can still look good 5 years later.
Second Hand
Second-hand clothing from retails or even family and friends can often be a steal, sometime's even getting things for free, just remember to wash out the smell that might otherwise bother you the whole day.
There are plenty of other posts online on how to easily save money buying clothing, these are just the few that I use, or otherwise found and find interesting. So remember to keep a lookout and control yourself with what you spend, and what you wear!
